Action for East African People

Action for East African People (AFEAP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit promoting the grassroots advancement and cultivation of the East African (EA) community. AFEAP’s vision is to empower East Africans tthrough culturally responsive and comprehensive initiatives that challenge inequalities in health, housing and education.


The mission of Action for East African People is to act on the immediate needs of women and children living in East Africa while promoting the grassroots advancement and cultivation of the East African Community of Bloomington, Minnesota and surrounding areas.

In East Africa, our mission is to empower East African women and children while meeting their immediate needs including health, housing, economic development, education and skills training, water sanitation, and food security. In Minnesota, we are dedicated to eliminating barriers to successful integration for new Americans by challenging inequalities and developing access to health, housing, culture, employment and education.

As a community hub, we strive for the preservation of the languages and traditions of new arrivals which is vital for community growth as well as social and economic empowerment. In the United States, we are headquartered in Minneapolis, MN with an additional office located in Washington DC.

International Vision

AFEAP has been committed to international development with a specialized focus on East African women and children.

We are opening project operations in 3 Countries: Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti. In East Africa, we have offices in Mogadishu, Somalia, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Djibouti with our international headquarters located in Nairobi, Kenya.

Taking Action Now

While AFAEP has a long-term mission, we realize that the community must be provided critical care and resources in order to address their most pressing needs. We are committed to implement our plans of action effectively, professionally and with compassion. We offer local services to address needs in healthcare, food security, housing, employment and education.

Our Board of Directors is made of both dedicated and committed women and men from the East African Community, 60% of which are women

This team of well-educated, dedicated leaders originally came from the affected East African regions and communities but who now live abroad across the globe. They are part of the people who have been affected and they know what’s needed in re-shaping their lives for the better.
